I was not able to attend this year but the reports I have received show that it was a good event and people had a good level of discussion and education. I would like to elaborate on some of the points that you raised in your article so that people can understand the logic of where we are. A number of the points really require an article by themselves but I will try to give the bare bones of the topics. The idea of moving to storing geometry in a database instead of part files came about from customer scenarios and large projects where users were wishing concurrent access to parts but then needing to duplicate data then resynchronize the results and understanding all the reasons that decisions were made. Although this is the method used by some very large organisations today, it was clear to the DS R&D team that there had to be a better way. Therefore the idea of using the database was investigated and prototyped before the acquisition of Matrix 1! The acquisition of the Matrix technology brought benefits that allowed enhanced scalability, remote location performance and integration with other PLM services. By the way CATIA V6 is not the 1st solution to store its model data in a database without file system. You reported Etienne’s comments about performance improvements, the scale of performance improvement is significant but many of these improvements in pure modelling performance will also be seen in the latest V5 releases because of the parallel development activities. The area where V6 can be significantly faster is in concurrent working, the huge assembly performance and aspects that combine a logical and physical view, e.g. ![]() ![]() Cabling, steelwork, systems design. You also mentioned that approaches that different customers are taking to V6, yes some customers are focused on getting the most from their V5 investment because it is a very good system, and probably the closest competitor to CATIA V6, some other customers have chosen to move to another system but there are also some very interesting companies that are moving to V6, like Jaguar Landrover and also companies using the parts of V6 that are not in V5 and mixing it with their V5 investment! An example of this is BMW. So there are all sorts of approaches that can be adopted that use migration and coexistence approaches. As you highlighted, COE workshops were well attended and customers want to know more before they decide what to do. Our goal in the CATIA brand is share that knowledge as widely as possible for people who were not able to attend COE. Your article highlights the difference between V5 and V6 assembly constraint methods. As you mention, CATIA V5 uses a typical parametric definition of assembly constraints that normally allowed the positioning of parts and some level of logical connection for movement, these connections were normaly stored inside the “Product” document and defined the connections for a set of parts within a specific product. The limitation of this was that it did not convey any mechanical or manufacturing intent or the different views of the product during the design, manufacturing, test, servicing or disposal aspects of it’s lifecyle. Therefore it needed the downstream applications to redefine the connections, for example: o the stress guys needed to recreate all the connections, o the manufacturing people needed to recreate all the assembly information o Fastener, welding and gluing applications needed their own unique features o More complex kinematic simulations required the structure to be rebuilt. Although users accepted to do these activities, (as they do in other solutions), it creates a mountain of rework, lifecycle management, “who is the master” questions that break the concept managed concurrent design. Therefore in V6 we have introduced the concept of Engineering Connections. These features: o Have a richer definition of how parts relate to each other and what they can do. O Know which part is the fixed or moving part and with what type of behaviour. O Are free of product structure locking and the need to redefine free movement. O Can be be driven by a logical or functional view of the product. O Can be lifecycled, configured and have variants. The advantages of using Engineering connections is immediately clear to a mechanical engineer, or manufacturing or stress guy, as soon as you start to use CATIA V6, but it does mean that the user needs to move away from the “CAD glue” idea of being able to place a part using constraints that allow positioning rather than design intent. This transition also has impacts when migrating from earlier versions because we may keep the positional information but it is almost impossible to know if the CATIA V5 assembly definition really represents the engineering definition the designer would want in V6. Later in the article, you highlight the differences between “save” in V5 and “propagate” in V6. ![]() These differences were specifically created to ensure that the use was more aware of the impact of what he was doing. V6 is heavily focused on concurrent working and therefore the impact “saving” work has on other people, processes and downstream activities is much more than just saving a document on your local disk and then sending it to the team as an attachment at a later time. The lifecycle, locking and ownership aspects of parts is pretty transparent to users and reflects the behaviour that people will be familiar with when working with a CAD plus PDM solution. You mention the Workspace in your article. The idea of the workspace came from the Smarteam days, and when the concept was then shared with RVI and they, rightly, said “that’s what we need!!” Since that time there have been a number of methodologies developed to perform that function and now there are some unique tools to do that in ENOVIA. Essentially these are tools that allow users to perform design studies without impacting the global data set. The observation from Bell about the CATIA R2011 user interface and number of clicks has been massively improved in R2012 and R2012x and in the coming releases because it was absolutely not what we wanted.
